On October 20, 1949 N. Joe Woodland filed a patent for a circular bar code to be placed on grocery items and scanned at checkout. The patent was granted three years later in 1952 and expired after 17 years in 1970. This identification concept was given a practical test by the RCA company in their 1972 Kroger store installation of a developmental automated checkout system.
